top 5

I've been trying to figure out how to do this post without offending my very attractive husband. He isn't easily offended, so I'm not sure why I'm worried. He also already knows everything I'm going to say in this post. And since Paul Newman died this weekend, it's time I post this.

1. Paul Newman has to be one of the very best looking men. ever.

2. Christian Bale (even though sometimes his teeth look like fangs.)

3. Harrison Ford (Han Solo era.)

4. I can't pick a number 4. It's between Orlando Bloom, Johnny Depp, Jared Leto (when his hair is trimmed), Robert Redford (Sundance Kid era), and Tom Cruise (I know he's weird and short, but he's pretty good-looking.)

5. Patrick Dempsey. Okay - he shouldn't really make it to the top 5, but he's so much better looking now than he was in Can't Buy Me Love. Am I right?

Please feel free to add or disagree. (Sorry Emily - JT didn't make the list).

to help you a little with number 4- I would say Jared Leto in "My So Called Life". Tom Cruise is attractive but a little too squirrely or something. I can't put my finger on it. Oh, and I might have to add in Ethan Hawke- "Reality Bites" style. (I know- weird teeth). AND there is just something about Dermot Mulroney. Okay, I'm done.

I forgot someone and oh how could I forget???? (Look what you've done Leigh.) Ryan Gosling!!! Hello.

okay - how did I forget Ryan Gosling and Ethan Hawke? They should both be in the running for number 4.

Yeah Leigh, I'm pretty surprised you didn't have Ethan Hawke on the original list -- although it would have to be a while ago; I saw him on something recently and his teeth looked too gross. That is an awesome picture of Paul Newman! I would put Johnny Depp above Christian Bale, personally. And what about Brad Pitt from A River Runs Through It?

Great list. As long as you're naming past-era versions of Paul Newman and Robert Redford, I have to say that James Caan was pretty great about 30 years ago too (now he seems icky, and not just cause he's older). Have you seen A Bridge Too Far? It's got a 1970s cast you wouldn't believe, including a great Caan, Redford, and Ryan O'Neal (also icky now).

As for more of the moment actors, I know he doesn't have quite the same resume yet, but Wentworth Miller would definitely make my list.

Okay, I know everyone thinks I would say Tom Selleck, and while that is true...you have to be honest and say Matthew McConaughey. He is pretty much something with that smile and those eyes.

I did think of Brad Pitt, but the whole Angelina thing was unfortulately overshadowing his good looks from 15 years ago. (He also looked pretty great in Legends of the Fall.)

I love that old picture of Paul and Joanne. I want to be them in that picture. As for old school, no one does it for me like James Gardner back in the day, or Sean Connery in Darby O'Gill and the Little People. Anything after that for Sean gets a bit boring. Excellent post. I think I want to copy it and pretend it was a tag.

after giving it some thought, tom selleck should really be on there. i agree with Stephanie. the mustache is hot, admit it. And also, what about will smith? i think you must be racist to not have included him :)

For one thing you can't call it the top 5 when you've got 3 people in the runnings for #4.

I'm with you on Patrick Dempsey. How old is he anyway ... defnitely looks better with age--in fact so does Carl. Mustaches Emily? Oh dear!

I love Patrick Dempsey! He is a gorgeous...now old...man.:) My number one will always be Christopher Reeve because of Somewhere in Time...aaahhh...such a handsome man!

Christian Bale's on your pseudo top 5 list? Interesting! Not that he's not handsome or anything - I just don't know if he'd be in my top 5 :)

I saw him in The Prestige and the whole time, I was like, "Geez, his English accent isn't so great! I can totally tell he's faking it!" and then I figured out that he really is from the UK and he fakes his American accent, lol.

Can none of you comment on Matthew McConnaughey? You obviously don't live in Texas where this great picture has been in the grocery store on the cover of Texas Monthly. Man....it makes the grocery store worth the trip.

Steph I'm down with Matthew McConnaughey. He is good!Maybe it is a Texas thing! I'm with Emily too I need JT to be up on that list. I don't know about is character, but he looks real good!

I'm so in on the Paul Newman, Robert Redford back in the day, and Christian Bale now. Whether it's the batman or the rancher on 3:10 to Yuma or the dragon fighter in Rign of fire...I am such a fan.

Gosling yes, but have you seen the wacked out coke-head of Half Nelson? Eh. I have to say that most of the others have too many caveats....if it was only Tom Cruise Top Gun era and thoughts of him didn't include all the present day baggage then yes, but Cruise, Pitt, and several others just too much baggage. Dempsey really just continues to get better and better looking, but the acting hasn't improved since Can't Buy Me Love.

As for McConaghey...good looking can only last so long if you don't want them to open their mouth. He likes himself way too much.

I would also add Gerard Butler and I'm kind of surprised no Clooney.
