the pee house

Sometimes I feel like I live in the pee house. Boys are just not that clean with their bodily functions. Mine sometimes hit the toilet bowl, but usually not at night.

Speaking of night. I don't want to make any of my kids feel bad, but I need a little help. Sam and Charlie are still both wearing pull ups. The expense is getting annoying, but besided that, they wake up wet (sheets, clothes) most nights - even with the pull ups. And I wonder if they can learn how to wake up when they need to with pull ups on.

Do any of you have any experience with boys and night training? I think Sam may have some sort of disorder that makes it very hard for him to wake up at all in the night. I asked the doctor about it and he said they just grow out of it at a certain point, but he's almost 7. Charlie went a week with only wearing underpants to bed (about a month ago) and stayed dry. But then he started wetting again and wanted pullups again. I think after these ones run out I'm not going to buy anymore because I'm always changing peed on sheets either way!

Jamie's oldest didn't stay dry at night until right around the time she turned 7. Apparently there's some kind of medication they can take, and the pediatrician told Jamie they could start using it when Brooklyn turned 7, but then she got better on her own anyway.

I don't know about medication and I don't know anything about night training because it came so easily with Henry but I've known a lot of parents who limit their child's fluid intake in the evening so they don't have to go potty at night. You could try that until peeing at night becomes less familiar to them.

Yeah, that's what my parents did with my youngest brother. They wouldn't let him drink anything after dinner, and sometimes if did let him, they made him go pee before he went to bed. That worked though. Good luck! ps, if you need any help during the nights, I'm sure Andy would love to come stay with you! :)

My Gabe is 7 (actually nearly 8) and he still doesn't wake up to pee. He would pee through every night if we didn't use Goodnights (way better protection than pull ups). I just asked his pediatrician about it and she said there is medication, but it's just a matter of the "wiring" getting working. She said most kids get it together by 9, and not to worry unless he's embarrassed by it. We've tried limiting liquids and waking him up during the night, but the bottom line is this kid is a very deep sleeper. He's like a sleepwalking zombie. So, we are forking over the dough for goodnights (make sure they are pulled up all the way and the pjs aren't tucked into them), and hoping it doesn't last too much longer. My vt said her son was the same way and they used the sensor with the alarm when he was around 8. She says it was like having a newborn again, getting up several times a night, but that there was big improvement in a couple weeks. Maybe it coincided with when he would naturally have outgrown it anyway?

Just keep reminding yourself, very few boys wet the bed in college. Unless it's one of those party colleges.

well, i was probably OLDER than sam by the time i was able to wake up to go to the bathroom. i remember wetting the bed for a long time and i was so worried i'd never learn how to wake up. so yeah, i think somehow a light suddenly turns on and you're able to wake up. (oh, and one time sara wet the bed when she was, like, 23.)

I'm so glad you wrote about this, we're having isues also. I've heard those monitors you can buy are really effective. I'll let you know. I wish I was going to be at reunion. I've really been stewing about this whole bed wetting ordeal, and would love to have another mom to commiserate with.

Kenzie used to habe a problem with this but around 8 1/2 she did alot better. We still make sure she doesn't drink at least two hours before bed if possible. Sometimes they have immature organs and can't hold it all night but Kenzie is an exceptionally hard sleeper so I think she just couldn't wake herself up. Good luck!
